Nightmare Taking Spotlight from Dreamgirls Debut

Nightmare Taking Spotlight from Dreamgirls Debut
By Andrea M. White

Celebrity beef and gossip are all the rage of the entertainment industry these days. With television shows like BET’s Beef the Series, along with a variety of DVDs with hip-hop artists taking shots at each other, it seems like fans can’t get enough of engaging themselves into the drama-filled lives of celebrities. From the hip-hop stage to the big screen, the newest celebrity drama, that has even my ear to the ground, is the alleged beef between R&B’s sweetheart Beyonce Knowles and her costar, American Idol contestant, Jennifer Hudson.

First leaked on a popular tabloid media website, sources purportedly told a reporter that there was bad blood between Knowles and Hudson, mainly because of the attention Hudson has been receiving from her legendary performance in the remake of the Broadway classic, Dreamgirls. Though Knowles has denied any animosity toward her costar, she poured gasoline onto the burning rumor mill with her sudden departure from the NYC premiere held Monday night. Her excuse however was that she had planned a romantic evening with her man Hova along with the private plane she had rented to celebrate his 37th birthday. With all the negativity surrounding the relationships of the female cast, they have held their composure and have handled themselves in a respectable manner.

Amidst the so-called beef, it’s important that fans and supporters of this film and this casts of stars, which include Eddie Murphy, Jamie Foxx, and Danny Glover, not forget what is important. Dreamgirls has created the type of buzz that black films have been longing for. Not only hand-clapping, standing ovation buzz, but Oscar buzz for the 24-year-old Hudson who received a standing ovation in the middle of the film during Monday night’s premiere. Lets not continue to let instigating soothsayers destroy the fact that this film has brought Broadway to its knees with thanks and praise, along with interest of recreating the Broadway film due to the spark that Dreamgirls has created in both the US and the UK. Among all of the not-so-golden black films released today, this production shines as one of the best. Supporters of positive, black entertainment must continue to support the efforts and on December 25th, end the nightmare at a theatre near you and watch this dream come to light on the big screen.

Cheadle to Direct and Star in Miles Davis Movie

Cheadle to Direct and Star in Miles Davis Movie
By Andrea M. White

Oscar nominated actor, Don Cheadle is set to direct and star in the story of the legendary jazz icon, Miles Davis. An idea that has held his devotion for almost a decade, Cheadle has been trying to get the wheels turning on Davis’s biography for some time, but due to complicated issues related to music rights, the Hotel Rwanda star could not bring the life of the jazz great to the big screen.

Sony BMG had Cheadle’s hands tied with legal loopholes which hindered the star from developing his idea. With the help of some heavy-hitters in the film industry, including producer, Cary Brokaw, Cheadle was able break through the red-tape and start preparing this new film, which is scheduled to be released next year. Brokaw, who was instrumental in getting the red-tape cleared for this film, has won 2 Emmy’s including an Emmy for the HBO mini-series, Angels in America.

The story of Miles Davis is sure to be both sad and intriguing. Davis could be a milestone and a madman simultaneously. This genius was able wow the industry with his innovative music vision and fusion, and at the same time be confrontational and brash due to his natural facade combined with recreational drug use. The story of Miles Davis is sure to keep audiences captivated, along with the Cheadle who is destined to make this his most stellar performance.

DJ Mil Matik

This East Orange (Illtown), New Jersey native found Philadelphia as his home away from home after graduating from Temple University with a Bachelor's degree in Broadcasting , Telecommunications & Mass Media. This young entrepreneur, producer, DJ and personality got his first taste of radio as the Production Director and On air Personality for W.H.I.P., a student ran radio station at Temple University. There he honed his skill, knowledge and passion for the business. Alongside his business partner and homeboy for life, Mat Don, he began developing the company Amerikaz Most Wanted !nteract!ve enterta!nment. Mil says,"Growing up in my neighborhood there weren't too many options. Your main options were either to be a good athlete or to gangbang, so to be able to do what I'm doing is truly a blessing!"

Mil took what he learned from college radio and applied it to his internship at WPHI. Shortly after beginning his internship, he helped co-produce the night show from 10p-2a with DJ Touchtone. Through his constant grind, positive outlook, and God given talent he was hired as a promotion assistant, production assistant, and board operator exactly one year from the day he started as an intern. After he showed his capabilities as a legitimate on-air personality as co-host of the weekly hip hop show "Sound of The Streets", The Heavy Hitter Edition with DJ Kam, he was given the opportunity to hold down overnights on the weekend.

Hosting and/or spinning at over 300 college events and parties and tearing down clubs all over the east coast, Mil has definitely made his presence felt as a major contributor to the mixtape market and the C.O.O. of his own company. He is currently the Assistant Production Director and has moved from weekends to six days a week as an On-Air Personality. With the success of radio and numerous outside hustles, Mil plans to go back to school to receive his Master's Degree. His hunger, humility, and work ethic have him well on his way to the road to success. With his goal and his ideas, he is far from being done, he is just getting started!

i am...AMW...r u???

It has been a awhile since we got to honor someone for being AMW. So that being said…I announce our newest member to the elite list of those who can say…I am Amerikaz Most Wanted …are you? I could give a bio on how Aaron McGruder took America by storm but I am no writer and I don’t make movies or claim to know or have done extensive research on American culture. However as most monorities know s@%t is f@*ked up for us in the media. Yes it isn’t as bad as before but the glass still looks half empty if you are getting your views from the news. So it is truly refreshing when someone comes along and let’s the world know every week in the newspaper how we view things. He is truly AMW. But don’t take my word for it research it for yourself read the books and comics. IF YOU ARE TOO LAZY..FINE. Here is the opion of a well known wirter, movie producer (who challenged the presidents theory in farenhieght 911), and a person who has done extensive research on American culture.

Forward from Aaron McGruder's Right to Be Hostile:

Written by Michael Moore

I can't remember what those kids were doing in the first Boondocks comic I saw, but I do remember exactly what passed through my mind when I read it: "How the hell did this get into a daily newspaper?"
I stopped reading the comics page a long time ago. It seems that whoever is in charge of what to put on that page is given an edict that states: "For God's sake, try to be as bland as possible and by no means offend anyone!" Thus, whenever something like Doonesbury would come along, it would be continually censored and, if lucky, eventually banished to the editorial pages. The message was clear: Keep it simple, keep it cute and don't be challenging, outrageous or political.
And keep it white!
It's odd, considering all the black ink that goes into making up the comics section (and color on Sundays) that you rarely see any black faces on that page. Well, maybe it's not so odd after all, considering the makeup of most newsrooms in our country. It is even more stunning when you consider that in many of our large cities like New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, where the white population is barely a third of the overall citizenry, the comics pages seem to be one of the last vestiges of the belief that white faces are just...well, you know...so much more happy and friendly and funny!
Of course, the real funnies are on the front pages of most papers these days. That's where you can see a lot of black faces. The media love to cover black people on the front page. After all, when you live in a society that will lock up about 30 percent of all black men at some time in their lives and send more of them to prison than to college, chances are a fair number of those black faces will end up in the newspaper.

But to be honest, the newspapers don't just show bad black. They have "good" black people they cover too! Like Clarence Thomas. And Condoleezza Rice. See, they care.
Oops. There I go playing the race card. You see, in America these days, we aren't supposed to talk about race. We have been told to pretend that things have gotten better, that the old days of segregation and cross-burnings are long gone, and that no one needs to talk about race again because, hey, we fixed that problem.
Of course, nothing could be further from the truth. Sure, the "whites only" signs are down, but they have just been replaced by invisible ones that, if you are black, you see hanging in front of the home-loan department of the local bank, across the entrance of the ritzy suburban mall or on the doors of the US Senate. (Ninety-seven percent Caucasian and going strong!)
Except for the occasional op-ed, where is the discussion of any of this in our daily newspapers? Fortunately, and hilariously, it is on the comics page in the form of Aaron McGruder's The Boondocks. With bodacious wit, in just a few panels, each day Aaron serves up--and sends up--life in America through the eyes of two African-American kids who are full of attitude, intelligence and rebellion. Each time I read the strip, I laugh, and I wonder how long McGruder is going to keep this gig going. How long can The Boondocks get away with the things it says? How far will he take it tomorrow? How on earth can the most truthful thing in the newspaper be the comics?

Of course, The Boondocks has had a rough road to travel. It has seen its share of censorship. Papers have been deluged with angry letters. Some have moved it to the editorial pages. A few have dropped it. But fortunately for all of us, more newspapers than ever now carry The Boondocks. And these papers are not just in urban (read: black) areas but in places like Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Dubuque, Iowa. The strip has crossed over into the vast American mainstream, proving once again that the best art finds its way to all people regardless of their background. And when you have a society where 44 million people work for a living but have no health insurance, where millions have lost their savings and pensions due to Wall Street scandals, where no one feels secure that his job will be his job a year from now--well, those aren't race issues (although African-Americans are the ones hit the hardest), those are bread-and-butter nightmares facing all Americans who are not privileged to be in the upper 10 percent. They are issues of class, and once the discussion turns to class, those in charge seek to shut it down as quickly as possible. Why? Because class is what will unite white and black and brown in this country and, God forbid, if that day ever comes...well, let's just say the powers that be will be wringing their hands over much more than some smartass comic strip.
So until that day, let The Boondocks go on its merry, subversive way ("Hey, it's just a cartoon") and hope that, somewhere down the road, when we all live in a more just America, we will look back and say that, in the beginning, the revolution wasn't televised, it was on the comics page.

jesse owens legacy lives on despite racism

Concerns raised over racism during Cup
By Kelly Whiteside, USA TODAY
Thu Jun 1, 7:56 PM

Olympic Stadium in Berlin, where African-American sprinter Jesse Owens famously won four gold medals in the 1936 Olympics in front of Adolf Hitler, will host six matches of the World Cup soccer finals, including the championship July 9. The stadium has been renovated with a stunning steel-and-glass roof and luxury suites, with one VIP lounge bearing Owens' name.

Despite the new look, the stadium might have a hard time escaping its history as a symbol of racial intolerance. Seventy years after what became known as the Nazi Olympics, increasingly menacing racism within Europe is a major story line for this edition of soccer's quadrennial showcase.

In Germany and several other European nations, crowds shower minority players with racial insults at times. Several of the U.S. team's African-American players who compete professionally in European leagues say they have been targets of discrimination and verbal and even physical abuse because of their race — on and off the field. There are concerns about how racial incidents might affect the World Cup in Germany, where the 32-team tournament begins June 9 and will be held in 12 cities....

The Living Legend...Is AMW Russell Simmons

Amerikaz Most Wanted interactive entertainment salutes all who are and were AMW. Each month we will make an effort to salute those who can be perceived as such. They question the norm, inspire thought and creativity, and stir emotion in all people young and old. These people may or not be role models…but they are Amerikaz.Most.Wanted....R U?

How can you sum up the life of a living legend. Simple...

"WHAT NEXT"...

He's done it all and continues to do so. It would do the man no justice to say that he his the co founder of Def Jam the single most influential recording label of it's time. Why others see that accomplishment as astronomical for Russ it was merely a beginning. From hip-hop to around the globe and back again that is Russell. As the owner of RUSH communications he spans Phat Fashions, (featuring the Phat Farm, Baby Phat, and Phat Farm Kids lines, which expects to bring in an estimated $615 million in retail sales this year) and music (he is chairman of Island/Def Jam records, although he sold his stake in the company in 1999). There's a new financial-services arm, an entertainment unit that includes the acclaimed Def Comedy Jam and Def Poetry Jam series of live shows and television programs, a monthly magazine, and an energy soda, DefCon3. Rush also houses the nonprofit Hip-Hop Summit Action Network, a nationwide series of youth conferences aimed at increasing voter registration and political awareness, and the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation. Isn't that enough?
Of course not...Do your research. This Man is a Global Icon from France, Japan, china, Africa, Australia, United Kingdom, Holland, all of south America, and back to Hollis, Queens in New York. At 48 years of age.. He still asks his favorite question..."What Next?"

Black White...IS AMW...did u get your race card??

Black white is AMW. There is no doubt about that. These two families have joined together to change thier cultures and thier skin...and it is not a comfortable fit for anyone. This show stirs emotions, questions societies acceptence, and shines a bright light in a dark place. Race relations. It's America's Blind Spot and everyone knows it. read the reviews and WATCH THIS SHOW!!! Even if you dislike it you will be inspired to think about the category that we all are put in on a daily basis...RACE.

"It demonstrates the potential of reality television to go beyond determining who can eat the most worms or scream the loudest, to illuminate important social and cultural issues." -Philadelphia Inquirer Jonathan Storm

"Black. White." makes you think, makes you want to have a conversation about racial issues and makes you examine your own beliefs and biases. How often does a TV show do that? " -Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Rob Owen
